# AC Coil Cleaning

**Gulfstream Cooling cleans AC evaporator coils and drain pans for homes across Palm Beach County, removing the mold, biofilm and dust that cause musty smells, weak airflow and clogged condensate drains.** In South Florida the indoor coil stays wet almost year-round, so growth builds up faster here than in most of the country. A professional coil cleaning gets your system breathing again and helps prevent the drain backups that are behind many "my AC stopped working" calls.

## Signs your AC coil needs cleaning

Most homeowners don't see their evaporator coil, since it sits sealed inside the air handler. These are the symptoms that point to it:

- **Musty or moldy smell.** A damp, mildew odor when the system starts up usually comes from growth on the coil or in the drain pan, and it travels through every vent in the house.

- **Weak airflow.** Dust and biofilm packed into the coil fins restrict how much air can pass through, so less of it reaches your rooms.

- **Longer run times and higher bills.** A coated coil can't absorb heat efficiently, so the system runs longer to reach the temperature you set.

- **Water near the air handler.** Sludge in the drain pan clogs the condensate line. The pan overflows, or the float switch trips and shuts the system off.

- **Ice on the indoor unit.** Restricted airflow across a dirty coil is one of the common reasons evaporator coils freeze.

## What our coil cleaning includes

Every coil cleaning is done by a factory-trained Gulfstream Cooling technician and covers:

- **Inspection.** We check the evaporator coil, drain pan and air handler cabinet and show you what we find.

- **Coil cleaning.** We clean the coil surface to remove dirt, dust and biofilm without bending the fins.

- **Drain pan cleaning.** We remove mold and sludge from the pan and the delta plate above it.

- **Drain line flush.** We clear and flush the condensate line so water drains freely.

- **Filter check.** We check the air filter and tell you if anything else needs attention.

## Why coils get dirty faster in Palm Beach County

Your evaporator coil pulls moisture out of the air every minute the AC runs, and in Palm Beach County that is nearly every day of the year. The coil and drain pan stay wet, dust from the return air sticks to them, and mold and biofilm grow on that layer. Homes with pets, nearby construction, or filters that go too long between changes build up even faster.

## How often to schedule coil cleaning

We recommend having the coil and drain pan inspected at each maintenance visit, twice a year in our climate: once in spring before peak cooling season and once in fall. Many systems need a full cleaning every one to two years, and sooner if you notice any of the signs above.

**In Palm Beach County, AC evaporator coils should be inspected twice a year and fully cleaned every one to two years, or sooner if you notice a musty smell, weak airflow or water near the air handler.** Florida systems run almost year-round, so the coil and drain pan stay wet and collect dust and mold faster than in cooler climates. Gulfstream Cooling checks the coil and drain pan at every maintenance visit and will tell you when a cleaning is due.

Is the black growth on my AC coil or drain pan mold?2026-10-08T11:49:47-04:00

Is the black growth on my AC coil or drain pan mold?
](#collapse-1-4006)

**Dark spots and slimy buildup on an AC coil, delta plate or drain pan are almost always mold and biofilm.** They feed on the constant moisture and the dust that passes through the system. Left alone, the growth spreads odors through your ductwork and can clog the condensate drain. A professional coil and drain pan cleaning removes it.

Can a dirty AC coil raise my electric bill?2026-10-08T11:49:48-04:00

### [

Can a dirty AC coil raise my electric bill?
](#collapse-1-4007)

**Yes.** A dirty evaporator coil can't absorb heat efficiently and restricts airflow, so your air conditioner runs longer to cool the same space and uses more electricity. Cleaning the coil helps the system run closer to its rated efficiency.

Can I clean my AC evaporator coil myself?2026-10-08T11:49:48-04:00

](#collapse-1-4008)

**Homeowners can change the air filter and keep the area around the air handler clear, but the evaporator coil itself is best left to a technician.** It sits inside a sealed cabinet next to electrical components, the aluminum fins bend easily, and the wrong cleaner or too much water can damage the coil or flood the drain pan. Gulfstream Cooling technicians clean the coil, pan and drain line in one visit.

**Most residential AC coil and drain pan cleanings are finished in a single visit.** Your Gulfstream Cooling technician will confirm the scope after inspecting the coil, since heavy buildup or a clogged drain line can add time. Call 561-855-0306 to schedule.
